Work has begun on Berlin's newest park at the former railyards of Gleisdreieck. Artful renderings - like that above by Atelier Loidl - already have us dreaming of picnics on the railbeds and cinema beneath the stars next summer.
Nothing, apparently! Foundations were excavated and utilities coordinated but the site has been laying dormant for months, and during Berlin's busiest building season. The new park at Sellerbrücke has also been completed but units 20 - 30 are nowhere to be seen!
Berlin's 2009 Digital Umwelt Atlas is now available for your viewing pleasure up at the Senatsverwaltung für Stadtentwicklung. The atlas provides a detailed map of the city distributed across twelve different biotypes. Here we can learn important factoids, such as 18.7% of Berlin's area is made up forests and woods or that we have over 200 hectares of moors and swamps!
spent a few hours yesterday creeping around the abandoned cold war listening station atop teufelsberg. energetic vegetation overruns the remains of the western allies deepest penetration behind the iron curtain, now the playground of graffiti artists and local dopers. the site's spacious domes once sheltered the most sensitive of technological ears as they eavesdropped on enemy communications, but today the entire site is dominated by the sound of the relentless wind tearing through the industrial textiles and prefab structures as they fall to ruin.
as we are quite obsessed with Berlin and its ever evolving cityscape, we gladly welcome any tips, pics, or quips regarding the city's urban planning, lack thereof, construction / destruction, or such demolitions or discoveries that our readers would care to toss over the transom.
